Katir smashes Ingebrigtsen’s 5,000 meter European record

MADRID, 21 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish athlete Mohamed Katir broke the European record of 5,000 meters this Friday, held by the Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen, with a spectacular time of 12:45.01 in the Diamond League event held in Monaco.

“My goal was the European record so I’m happy. It’s been a very tough race, with strong rivals but I’m also strong. The goal now is Budapest,” said the Murcian in statements provided by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA).

Katir followed in the wake of the Ethiopian trident that prevailed in the prestigious Principality event at the Luis II Stadium. The Spaniard, Katir, silver and bronze in the 2022 European and World Championships in 5,000 and 1,500 meters, finished fourth and beat Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s mark by three seconds (12:48.45 in 2021).

Hagos Gebrhiwet won the race with a personal best of 12:42.18, ahead of fellow Ethiopians Berihu Aregawi and Telahun Haile Bekele.
