The ex of Isabel Pantoja and former mayor of Marbella is going through a very delicate moment. At 76 years old and after spending almost three weeks hospitalized for respiratory failure, he seemed to improve enough to be discharged this past Monday. However, the news that comes about his health is not at all encouraging: “His condition is serious and irreversible”they assure. Julian Muñoz he is at his daughter’s house Eloise and his sister has moved there Elia and his mother, Mayte Zaldivarwho burst into tears behind the cameras: “He is very serious and I am going to be with him until the end”has said.
Very excited, Zaldívar commented to reporters who were interested in the situation that the entire family is united at the moment, accompanying Julián Muñoz, who despite his circumstances is happy to be surrounded by his loved ones: “I’m not going to leave his side”he said to the former ‘first lady’ of Marbella.
Julián Muñoz went to prison in 2006 for crimes of embezzlement and prevarication. During the time he was in prison, he accumulated different pathologies that led to a delicate state of health. He suffers from ischemic-hypertensive heart disease, together with type 1 diabetes mellitus and a numerous condition, including arteriopathy. In the last two years in prison, he was forced to visit the hospital 29 times. The prison’s deputy medical director herself reported that Muñoz’s risk of death in the medium term (between one and five years) was greater than 50% despite treatment. In 2016, he was released on parole due to a proven “incurable illness.”
At the center of the scandal
Julián Muñoz came to the fore in 2003, when, as mayor of Marbella, he hired Isabel Pantoja as the image of the city. Then, he was married to Mayte Zaldívar, mother of his two daughters, but he left everything when he fell madly in love with the tonadillera. Their clandestine romance lasted a year, during which their meetings took place in the artist’s apartment in Guadalpín. Despite denying the rumors, they surrendered to the evidence and made their affair public in El Rocío. Images of him in a horse-drawn buggy went around the country. “I felt like the most important guy in the world, I had gotten a character as impressive as Isabel Pantoja to notice me, I was the fucking master”said Julián Muñoz in the Telecinco docuseries It’s not time for revenge.
They became inseparable and walked their ‘teeth, teeth’ throughout Spain. Together they acquired the exclusive Mi Gitana house and Julián Muñoz became the first man to live in Cantora after Paquirri’s death. He even offered to give his last name to a young Chabelita.
In 2006, Julián was arrested in the third phase of Operation Malaya for alleged bribery and embezzlement of public funds and was sentenced to 20 years in prison for several cases of urban corruption. She supported him and even visited him in prison on two occasions. However, shortly after, Pantoja announced her breakup exclusively: “My relationship with Julián has ended. It has been a very painful decision”. In 2007, Pantoja suffered the same fate as her ex: she was arrested for money laundering and sentenced to 24 months in prison. She entered Alcalá de Guadaíra in 2014 and always blamed him. Since then, the name of Julián Muñoz has been banned from the tonadillera environment.
The writings of Julián Muñoz
In January 2022, the former mayor returned to the front line of media attention with a documentary on Telecinco in which he recounted his years with the interpreter of Sailor of Lights. He portrayed the birth and death of a love that, according to him, led him to the most absolute ruin: “I wrote a lot in prison. I had an obsession with the same thing: the thought of Isabel Pantoja. It makes me feel ashamed and sad. “It’s angry to read this, to have loved her so much. I have conflicting feelings.” They were true love letters: “I love her very much and I’m dying for her. I’m dying for you, little gypsy, you don’t know how much I love you. She also remembers me, she says I’m very thin, she wants me to eat. ‘My gypsy tells me “He has sworn that he has read my letters and that he loves me dearly. When he calls me ‘My little one’ I go crazy,” he read.
The breakup and the years in prison helped him reflect and sing the ‘mea culpa’: “Then I was the king of Mambo, today I regret it. It causes me shame and pain. I was to blame for everything, and Mayte had nothing to do with it or any guilt and Isabel Pantoja was in the game with me”. And he added: “What I liked most about Isabel Pantoja was that aura and I didn’t have time to get to know or worry about getting to know the other person. I never stopped to think what kind of person she was. Now that time has passed, “She is cold and calculating. She doesn’t stitch without a thread.”
