The professional wrestler, actor and former rapper John Cena appeared naked on the Oscars stage this Sunday while presenting the award for Best Costume Design for Poor Things.
It was actually paying tribute to one of the craziest moments in Academy Awards history. when a naked man walked on stage at the 46th Academy Awards in 1974 while David Niven introduced Elizabeth Taylor.
It was at the height of the ’70s stripe fandom.when naked people frequently disrupted public events.
“Can you imagine if a naked man ran across the stage today?” Kimmel asked the Oscars audience after recalling the infamous moment. “I said, can you imagine if a naked man ran across the stage today? Wouldn’t that be crazy?”
Shirtless John Cena poked his head out from the corner of the stage. “I changed my mind. I don’t want to do the streak part,” Cena told Kimmel. “I just don’t feel good about it. It’s a fancy event, you know, you should feel ashamed right now for suggesting such a tasteless joke.”
Kimmel said that ““The part was supposed to be fun.”to which Cena hilariously responded, “The male body is no joke!”
Cena ended up taking the stage with nothing more than a large envelope covering his parts. The audience burst into laughter. Since she couldn’t open the envelope without her parts showing, there was a quick cut and she reappeared wearing a golden curtain-like toga.
Cena has a connection to this year’s Oscars thanks to his cameo in Barbienominated for eight Academy Awards.
