Italy dethrones the United States and wins its first Olympic gold in women’s volleyball

MADRID, 11 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Italian women’s volleyball team beat the United States in three sets (25-18, 25-20 and 25-17) in the volleyball final of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Sunday to claim their first gold medal in this discipline, in a packed South Paris Arena 1.

The team coached by Argentinian Julio Velasco, who had already made history by surpassing the semi-final ceiling, surprised the reigning Olympic champions with a very complete match in which they always had control.

The Italians dominated the game completely, so the victory in the final was never in danger. The best of the Italians was Paola Egonu, with 22 points in total, against a weak American defense, also hampered by the ineffectiveness of Avery Skiner, with only 7 points thanks to the great effort of the Italians.

Italy thus won its first gold in one hour and 13 minutes of play, with three incontestable sets (25-18, 25-20 and 25-17). The bronze medal went to Brazil, two-time Olympic champion, who defeated Turkey 3-1 on Saturday.
