The Italian Cycling Federation (FCI) has confirmed on Friday the death of the runner Sara Piffer, 19 years old and a native of Palù Di Giovo, after being hit by a car while training with her bicycle on the Rotalian plain.
An official statement reported the “serious accident” that “ended Piffer’s life” during training “on Cesare Battisti street, between Mezzocorona and Mezzolombardo.” According to that note, the young woman was overwhelmed by a vehicle “driven by a 70 -year -old man.”
The FCI text cited “initial reconstructions” by the police, noting that the accident had happened while that car “advanced to another vehicle in the opposite direction.” “Together with Sara, in a habitual morning training, she was her brother Christian Piffer, also a sub-23 competition cyclist, which was slightly injured in the collision,” said the same note.
“Sara ran to the Team Mendelspeck Ge-Man by Pineta Di Laives, successfully participating in national and international careers. Her passion for cycling and her commitment had made her one of the young promises of Trentino sport,” said the FCI.
The condolences statement pointed out later that “his death leaves friends, colleagues and the entire cycling movement, which binds to the Piffer family in a moment of immense pain.”
Cordian Dagnoni, president of the FCI, lamented this death: “A new bad news that adds to a long series of accidents that affect corridors and runners. This nth dramatic event demands a serious reflection, as we have been asking for for a long time, for that concrete measures are adopted and end these episodes. “
