Ignacio Martín will not continue as Sevens women’s coach

MADRID, 28 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Coach Ignacio Martín will not continue as women’s rugby sevens coach after failing to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games or for the Pre-Olympic at the European Games in Krakow (Poland), where the ‘Leonas’ Seven fell in the quarterfinals final (12-17) against the Czech Republic.

“The Technical Directorate of the Spanish Rugby Federation (FER) has decided to consummate the stage of Ignacio Martín as women’s selector of Sevens,” according to the FER in a statement.

Ignacio Martín, who took over from Pedro de Matías in April this year, had a contract until the conclusion of the European Games in Krakow and, “after not achieving the objectives set, it has been decided not to renew it.”

The ‘Leonas7s’ still have to play the last stage of the Rugby Europe Sevens Championship Series 2023, from July 7 to 9. In this tournament in Hamburg (Germany), the technical director of the FER, Alberto Socías, will be the interim coach.

“The FER Rugby Department will continue to drive this discipline that has brought so much success to Spain with determination and passion, deploying and accelerating an ambitious growth plan.
The Board of Directors thanks Ignacio Martín for his work and dedication, and wishes him luck in his next projects,” the note concluded.
