Ignacio Fontes, to the World for the low of Mechaal due to COVID

The Andalusian was very critical yesterday with the RFEA for not being included

MADRID, 1 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA) announced this Friday night the change in the call for the World Cup in Oregon (United States) with the entry of Ignacio Fontes in the 1,500 instead of Adel Mechaal.

“Changes in the list from Spain to Oregon. Mechaal, drops to 1,500 for positive in COVID-19. His place is occupied by Ignacio Fontes, who was registered as a reserve. Adel Mechaal will compete in 5,000 as long as he recovers in time to travel” , pointed out the RFEA.

The news jumps a day after the announcement of the 55 summoned for the World Cup in two weeks. Some 24 hours that aroused controversy in this case of the 1,500, since Fontes complained bitterly about Mechaal’s selection for the ‘milqui’ after having beaten him in the recent Spanish Championship.

“It’s an injustice, I’ve been feeling undervalued by the RFEA for many years. The names of the athletes who have a fixed place should be written in the criteria,” Fontes wrote on his Twitter account on Thursday, as part of an extensive criticism.

Mechaal, who withdrew yesterday in his 3,000 test at the Stockholm Diamond League, is confident that he will be able to test negative before the 5,000 in the World Cup, scheduled for July 21, while the 1,500 is on the 16th.
