Iceta expresses “respect and support” for Hermoso’s decision to denounce Rubiales’ kiss

BRUSELAS, 7 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The acting Minister of Culture and Sport, Miquel Iceta, expressed this Thursday from Brussels the Government’s “respect” and “support” for the player of the Spanish soccer team Jenni Hermoso after her decision to denounce the kiss she received without her consent of the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, during the World Cup medal ceremony held in Australia.

“The Government will always be by the side of women who exercise all possibilities in defense of their rights. Therefore, our respect and our support,” Iceta told the press at the headquarters of the European Parliament in Brussels, where He has traveled to present the priorities of the Spanish presidency in a parliamentary commission.

Precisely the European Parliament has decided to include in the agenda of its plenary session next week in Strasbourg (France) a specific debate on this matter, a debate that was requested by ERC and that has gone ahead with the consensus of a majority of parliamentary groups .

The debate in the plenary session of the Eurochamber will address violence and discrimination in sport after what happened in the final of the women’s soccer World Cup, a change in the agenda that Minister Iceta has considered “very good” because it will serve to “remember” the victory of the women’s team and because he believes that it reflects the “wave of indignation” that arose after the “regrettable and unacceptable” events carried out by Rubiales.

“Unfortunately this controversy, in some way, is obscuring the fundamental sporting fact,” said the minister, who then considered “very good” that the European institutions “echo the debate” and can contribute with their debates to ” effort of the whole society to make equality prevail”.

To questions about an internal report from the Higher Sports Council (CSD) that, according to the newspaper El Mundo, already pointed out abuse of power by Rubiales in February 2021, Iceta has defended that the Government “always” allows that when there is complaints that raise problems that may be criminal offenses “be the ordinary jurisdiction” who deals with it. This is the case of the irregularities included in that report, added the minister, whose matter “was filed by the judicial authority.”
