“I did what I could to save his life”

Joseph Maria Mainat He returned this Thursday to the Barcelona Court, where his ex-wife is being tried Angela Dobrowolski for one crime of revealing secrets and another of attempted murder. The Catalan television producer has withdrawn the charge for the first of these, the lesser.

“I confirm”he said in front of the Section 20 court, where minutes before his lawyer, Olga Tubau, had delivered a document signed by the producer to confirm the forgiveness of his ex-wife, whom we have seen in court these days with a new look.

Dobrowolski was charged with this crime after accessing her then husband’s email without his consent and forwarding the messages he had exchanged with his lawyers about the divorce proceedings and his will. For these acts, the prosecution requested three years in prison for her and the private prosecution one year.

After the accusation of revealing secrets was dropped, the German woman faces 13 years in prison for allegedly injecting her ex-husband with insulin during the early hours of June 23, 2020 with the intention of ending his life.

Angela Dobrowolski’s statement

The producer’s ex-wife told the court on Thursday that he suffered severe hypoglycemia while he was sleeping and that she helped him as best she could: “I did everything I could to save his life”.

The defendant explained to the Barcelona Court that she found Mainat “on the verge of death” and, after a second of shock, decided to get him up, clear his airways, give him a sachet of concentrated glucose for cyclists and call emergency services.

“I paid attention to him and meanwhile he was dying”she reiterated between sobs, and she repeated verbatim that she did not want her husband dead and that, despite regretting many things in her marriage, she did not hurt him or make him suffer or fail to help him.

The defendant did acknowledge in the trial before the Barcelona Court that they had a heated argument on June 22, 2020the night on which the events under investigation occurred.

The reason, according to her, was that he hid from her that he had filed for divorce while they were attending couples therapy, but the fight ended with both of them talking about giving each other a second chance and getting married again: “I loved him”he added during his statement, which lasted an hour and was witnessed by Mainat.

Dobrowolski said that they both calmed down, that she had dinner with her two children and her husband and that they all went to bed, but that she could not sleep because she was going through a crisis with her drug use: “I got into the habit and pattern that when I felt bad I would run away from home and get high, but I didn’t want to lose my family, I wanted to stay at home.”.

In the early hours of the 23rd, she got up to retrieve traces of substances she had hidden around the house, including the refrigerator, referring to the security cameras, where she is seen entering the kitchen 13 times in a short time and handling something behind the refrigerator door: “It was not unusual for me to be ‘getting high’ and on tiptoe, so as not to wake up my children and my husband”.

Then he returned to where Mainat was sleeping with the children: “The room was very dark and I heard snoring that is not normal, so I took the cell phone and looked at what was happening, who of my people was doing this snoring, when I see that Josep Maria was on the verge of death“, has said.

He has argued that then there was only “a second of shock, but not 20 minutes or half an hour”“and did everything she could to save him despite being scared and ‘high’, she said that she began to get him up, clear his airways, give him a 75 gram sachet of concentrated glucose for cyclists that she had placed around the house for emergencies and call 112 and give them all the information they asked for.

When the SEM arrived, she recalled that they injected him with something but that he was already coming out of the coma thanks to the glucose she gave him. Regarding the fact that he pointed to her as the cause, she interpreted it as meaning that he “was disoriented” and added that he hit a nurse and herself.

“I paid attention to him and meanwhile he was dying”she reiterated, sobbing, before the court, to which she repeated verbatim that she did not want her husband dead and that, despite regretting many things in their marriage, she did not hurt him or make him suffer or fail to help him.
