The Amazon Prime Video docuseries’GEO: Beyond the Limit‘or the fiction of Movistar’Riot gear‘, the latter winner of several awards in the last year, have redoubled interest in these bodies of the National Police in Spain.
In the case of the Special Operations Group, the documentary Prime Video narrates its selection process, in which 100 candidates must pass a long physical and mental training for months to gain access to the position.
For its part, ‘Anti-riot’, directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, introduced us to the day-to-day life of a group of this type in Madrid whose components are immersed in various problems after attending an uprising to evict a house.
But, How much do these members of the National Police really charge?
As National Police, they all start from the base salary of the police force. Basic Scale is about 10,893 euros per year, figure to which are added complements (destination, dangerous, specific) or operations at destination plus accumulations of his position as three-year terms.
These specific add-ons range from 479 euros per month to 1,046 for a Chief Commissioner, according to the table of Remuneration of State civil servant personnel.
Salary of a GEO
These accessories make the National Police charge on average about 24,600 euros per year on average throughout the body, a sum similar to that received by GEOs as described on the websites of the police unions.
However, these professionals, due to the nature of their interventions, usually come close to charging around 3,000 euros per month, as described in various forums of associations linked to members of the National Police.
Salary of a riot police or Police Intervention Unit (UIP)
The case of the riot police is different. The riot police, officially called the Police Intervention Unit (IPU), have a base salary of 10.66 euros gross per hour, as revealed in a circular by the Unified Police Union (SUP) when this body was the center of debate as a result of the displacement of many of its units to Catalonia during the 2017 riots and the well-known episodes of the Piolín ship.
This salary, which is later complemented by displacement or territoriality, in addition to rank, does not raise the salary of these Police officers too much with respect to the general scale, which has generated various complaints from the unions.
Access tests to be a National Police
Beyond what is seen in the Amazon docuseries, anyone who wants to access the National Police force must pass a series of specific physical tests. These are:
– Agility Test
– Pull-up test (men) and suspension (women)
– 1,000 meter endurance test
These tests will be followed by a theoretical knowledge test, an optional language test that can raise the score. From there, there will be a medical examination and a personal and professional interview to close the process.
