Hertha goes back to Hamburg in its stadium and stays in the Bundesliga

MADRID, 23 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Hertha Berlin avoided relegation to the second division of German football after beating Hamburg 0-2 on Monday in the second leg of the ‘playoff’ in which they were able to overcome the defeat at their stadium (0-1) to leave a campaign outside the Bundesliga to a historic team.

Hamburg, European champions in 1983, had taken a giant step to return to the country’s soccer elite by winning the capital a few days ago thanks to a goal from Ludovit Reis, but they could hardly savor that advantage in front of their fans since Dedryck Boyata leveled it all with a header off a corner early in the match.

The tie remained even until the 63rd minute when Marvin Plattenhardt made it 0-2 from a direct free kick, a disadvantage that the locals were unable to reduce and that forced them to play a fifth season in Bundesliga 2.
