Film diva Sigourney Weaver has landed on the Venetian canals to open the 81st edition of the International Film Festival, which kicks off on Wednesday 28 August. Smiling and joking, wearing white palazzo trousers, a straw boater and a Chanel belt, Sigourney Weaver posed at the foot of a gondola and between the canals on the eve of the opening of the Venice Film Festival. She was the first superstar to arrive in the Italian city.

The Venice Lido, the central venue of the festival, is hosting the programme of films in competition, which this year will run until 7 September. In competition there will be a Spanish presence in the Argentine film Kill the Jockeyby Luis Ortega, with the actress Úrsula Corberó, or in the film Babygirl by Halina Reijn, in which Antonio Banderas will be one of the protagonists alongside Nicole Kidman.
