Film diva Sigourney Weaver has landed on the Venetian canals to open the 81st edition of the International Film Festival, which kicks off on Wednesday 28 August. One of the most eagerly awaited highlights was the visit of Pedro Almodóvar, who is competing for the Golden Lion with his first English-language film, The room next door.
Smiling and joking, wearing white palazzo trousers, a straw boater and a Chanel belt, Sigourney Weaver posed at the foot of a gondola and between the canals on the eve of the opening of the Venice Film Festival. She was the first superstar to arrive in the Italian city.
The Venice Lido, the central venue of the festival, is hosting the programme of films in competition, which this year will run until 7 September. On the Spanish side, in addition to the aforementioned film by the La Mancha native, the film by Aitor Arregi and Jon Garaño will be screened. Shot between Madrid and New York, with the support of Movistar Plus+, the film also features the participation of Alessandro Nivola, Juan Diego Botto, Raúl Arévalo, Melina Mathews and Victoria Luengo. The film will be released in Spanish cinemas on 18 October by Warner Bros Pictures. It will also be distributed in Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, Central Europe and Eastern Europe (except Poland), the Nordic countries and Latin America.
In competition there will be a Spanish presence in the Argentine film Kill the Jockeyby Luis Ortega, with the actress Úrsula Corberó, or in the film Babygirl by Halina Reijn, in which Antonio Banderas will be one of the protagonists alongside Nicole Kidman.
