Griñán asks to suspend his prison sentence alleging that he suffers from “prostate cancer”

The former socialist president of the Junta de Andalucía has requested the Seville Court, which this Thursday authorized ten days for his voluntary admission to prison, to suspend such a requirement for admission to prison alleging a serious illness that occurred.

It is a “prostate cancer” that the lawyer himself Jose Antonio Grinan has confirmed to TVE and that, given his advanced state, he has an “impossible treatment in jail”.

After the First Section of the Hearing dismissed his appeal to the initial denial of his request for suspension of the prison sentence of six years and one day, the defense of the husband of Maria Teresa Caravaca argues that it is possible to order the suspension of the deprivation of the prison sentence without any requirement in the event that the prisoner is suffering from “a very serious illness with incurable conditions”.

All this, after the former Deputy Minister of Employment Agustin Barberaalso convicted, put forward similar arguments and the Court agreed to temporarily suspend the execution of his prison sentence.

initial petition

This Thursday, the Court dismissed the appeals of those convicted of the ‘ERE case’ and required seven of them, including the former president of the Junta de Andalucía. In his appeal, Griñán asked “to set a reasonable term longer than the agreed ten days, for the beginning of the execution of the custodial sentence”, specifically proposing “three months”, to “avoid a compliance (of the prison sentence) that could be failed, improper, unnecessary or inadmissible”. “Because what is undeniable is that if the partial pardon were granted or the nullity question for which the reduction of the sentence to two years is considered, the imprisonment that is ordered would be unsuccessful, improper or inadmissible, that is to say , unnecessary”, exposed his defense.

However, the Court flatly rejected these arguments and indicated that, in the case of Griñán’s appeal, “there is no reason for a postponement (to three months) of serving the custodial sentence, lacking legal support and which would mean a comparative injury to the rest of the prisoners and an arbitrary decision lacking justification”.

“Not in vain, the duration of the trial sessions lasted for a year, given the complexity of the matter, in addition to the time necessary for the drafting of the sentence”, the magistrates highlight in their new order, who conclude that “the course of time is not a reason for granting the requested suspension”.

Griñán, personally

Griñán has been married to María Teresa Caravaca for more than half a century. She is his greatest personal support in the ‘ERE case’. Remembered is that kiss that was given before everyone after the former socialist leader won the Andalusian elections in 2012. Her participation during her husband’s campaign was active. His reactions and his Twitter posts have also been commented on over the years. Mariateas her friends and acquaintances affectionately call her, has aristocratic blood, since she is the great-granddaughter of the X Marquis of Nevares.

After a few years of courtship, they married in 1970, in the Cathedral of Seville. They did it when he already had his professional life on track, since he did not say ‘yes, I want’ until passing the Labor Technician opposition in 1969, thus obtaining a position as a civil servant.

They have three children: Manuel (married since 2001 to Carmen Piñeiro Otero), Well y Miguel, who was born the result of a “happy oversight” (in the words of the former president) about ten years after the birth of the middle daughter of the couple. Griñán and Mariate are grandparents to a few grandchildren.
