After the finals of the European Cup in March, the largest domain in the south of the continent hopes to host the 2027 World Cups
MADRID, 3 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Grandvalira Resorts has reaffirmed itself in 2022 as a resort for international competitions, a decade after hosting, for the first time, an alpine skiing World Cup event and fourteen years after hosting a European Cup, with the confidence to see how the 2027 World Cups are held on its tracks.
Beforehand, the largest domain in the south of the continent will host the Finals of the European Cup this March, and those of the World Cup, in 2023. In addition, another international competition will also be held there in March: the now classic Kilometer Launched, the best opportunity to see the fastest skiers in the world.
For now, this 2022 in Ordino Arcalís, which has been part of Grandvalira Resorts since the 2019-20 season, one of the great skiing events has already taken place: the Freeride World Tour, which a few weeks ago brought to Andorra the second test of this competition of pure off-piste spectacle.
The Borrufa Trophy has also been held in Ordino Arcalís, which this year has celebrated its 30th anniversary and which is a great opportunity to see the great promises of skiing.
Grandvalira’s experience in top-level competitions dates back to 2008, when it hosted a women’s European Cup event. This event has been repeated since then, in different categories, in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013. In 2014, 2015 and 2018 Grandvalira hosted the finals of the European circuit, both in the male and female categories, a competition that returns to Andorran dominance between on March 14 and 20.
In terms of world competitions, 2012 was the debut year when the Avet track hosted the women’s slalom event of the World Cup. In 2016 Grandvalira was once again the scene of one of the world alpine skiing circuit events and 2019 was the year in which the World Cup Finals were held, the most prestigious alpine skiing event that has taken place to date. in the Andorran domain and that will be lived again in March 2023.
ROAD TO THE 2027 WORLD CUP
The sporting legacy that has been built up over all these years has allowed Andorra to face the challenge of presenting itself as a candidate to host the Alpine Skiing World Championships in 2027.
The trajectory of Grandvalira Resorts as organizer of major international sporting events could take on a new dimension in May, when the FIS Council chooses the resort that will host the 2027 World Cups. Together with the Andorran resort, they aspire to host the Swiss World Cup Crans-Montana, Germany’s Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Norway’s Narvik.
The Launched Kilometer World Cup Finals are already one of Grandvalira’s flagship competitions. This form of skiing emerged after workers in the gold and timber mines of the American Rocky Mountains began to organize meetings and competitions in their spare time. The first official competition in Saint Moritz (Austria) would not arrive until 1930.
The KL, which will return to Grandvalira on March 31, is a speed competition held on the Riberal track in the Grau Roig sector, a 900-meter track, with a 450-meter braking zone and a maximum gradient of 74 degrees that allows skiers to reach up to 200 km/h. For three days, Grandvalira will once again be the stage to see the fastest athletes in the world.
