Fernando Simón, on Cristiano: “Now he is an expert in PCR”

Fernando Simón, director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, participated in a talk with climbers Eneko and Iker Pou. The talk took place through a Facebook video call. During it, the government expert on pandemics analyzed the situation of Covid-19 in Spain and answered a question from Eneko Pou regarding the controversial comment by Cristiano Ronaldo on his social networks about PCR. The Portuguese described these tests as “bullshit.” Simón did not want to delve too deeply into the Portuguese star's comment, but took the opportunity to joke and give it a little 'pinch': “You have to know how to interpret the results of the tests correctly, it's not that easy. Then we have situations, that Cristiano Ronaldo is now a PCR expert. Nor am I going to go into the subject further, the man has many resources to learn if he wants ”.

Fernando Simón elaborated further to analyze the controversy that some PCR results are causing and acknowledged that he understood the Portuguese star's discomfort: “Since the epidemic began, everyone has been an expert in something related to health. Then there are many who are and then there are many who have learned along the way, and everyone has an opinion. However, these are questions to be understood. I am amused, obviously, but you have to understand him a bit. We have said it many times: doing tests for its own sake is useless if you don't know how to interpret the result. I think the problem here is that. I'm making it up because I don't know exactly what he said but there will probably have been positive results of the tests that have been done, which will then have been negative in a second result, and will say that it is not valid. But when you test people who are not likely to have the disease, what you have to look at is the negative results, not the positive.
