Espanyol wins again after a month and tightens the upper zone

Huesca comes out of relegation with its victory in the Aragonese derby

RCD Espanyol beat Elche CF 2-0 this Saturday and tightened the upper zone of LaLiga Hypermotion, after the draw of Sporting de Gijón in their visit to AD Alcorcón, in a matchday 16 where SD Amorebieta surprised CD Tenerife (2-0) and SD Huesca came out of relegation with its 0-2 victory against Real Zaragoza.

At the Municipal Stadium of Santo Domingo, the locals held on well to one of the ‘gallitos’ of the category, whose greater control of the ball did not crystallize on more occasions. In this way, Sporting wasted the opportunity to close the gap on the leader Leganés; At least they recovered second place, which was provisionally occupied by Valladolid.

That benefited Espanyol, who won a league match again after a month. At home, the ‘parakeets’ soon took a 2-0 lead with a double from Martin Braithwaite. The first arrived after a quarter of an hour, heading inside the area after eating Carlos Clerc’s ‘toast’; and the Dane scored the second in the 22nd minute, with a volley from a pass from Edu Expósito.

This harvest placed the blue and white team with 28 points, only one less than Sporting and Valladolid. For its part, Elche remained with 23 points and lost ground in the playoff zone, where Tenerife could not get close either due to its defeat at Field 2 in Lezama. The goals from Álvaro Núñez and Javier Avilés made Amorebieta happy, which despite everything continues to be in the lowest positions.

It was precisely Huesca that escaped relegation, with a victory of double value as it was the Aragonese derby. On the La Romareda pitch, Samuel Obeng headed the visitors ahead in the 15th minute, following a poorly defended corner. The final 0-2 score was scored by Juanjo Nieto midway through the second half, with a left-footed shot from the edge of the area while the rivals were protesting to the referee for a possible foul at the start of the play.
