England’s Leah Williamson will miss the World Cup after tearing her ACL

MADRID, 21 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

England captain and Arsenal player Leah Williamson will miss this summer’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her knee, the Gunner club said in a statement on Friday.

The 26-year-old withdrew through injury in Wednesday’s Women’s Super League loss to Manchester United, and now the worst omens have been confirmed, after collapsing in the 12th minute at Leigh Sports Village. “Williamson will now begin a rehabilitation period and will be out for a long time. She will be operated on in due time,” the entity advanced.

“Everyone at Arsenal will support Leah along this journey ahead of her and we would like to ask that her privacy be respected at this time,” the statement issued by the London club added.

The player herself confirmed on her social media profiles that “the dream of the World Cup and the Champions League is over” for her. “Until I have the words to express my feelings properly, I will struggle to verbalize them. The noise around the situation is loud and I need a bit of quiet to let it all sink in,” she said.
