Eibar, the ‘black beast’ of Girona

Girona will face Garitano’s Eibar in the semifinals of the promotion playoff to the First Divisionin a tie in which the gunsmiths are the clear favorites after finishing third in the league and having won clearly and deservedly in the two duels that have been played between the two this season.

All the teams have a rival that has the measure taken and that they are really bad at and in Girona the clear candidate to be their black beast is Eibar, who they have not won in the League since 2013 and who has turned out winner in the last six consecutive meetings in which they have met in both Second and First Division.

The history between Girona and Eibar, two teams that have established themselves in professional football throughout this 21st century, started in 2009the first season of modern football in which both coincided in the Second Division, precisely in the only time the Catalan team achieved a win and a draw and did not lose to the Basques, the only time this has happened.

Both coincided again in the 2013-2014also in Second, and in that season came the only victory of Girona in Ipurúa (0-3) of the five times he has visited the armory fiefdom. Since the second leg, in which the result was a draw (1-1) in Montilivi, the streak of six consecutive games between both teams began, ending with a victory for Eibar and that, for the interests of the Catalan team, they expect it to end next Thursday.

Las 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 seasons, the most successful of Girona throughout its history, the only ones in which it has been in the elite of Spanish football, the rivalry that had always existed in the silver category moved to the First Division. Four consecutive wins for Eibar in this period in which everything was thrashed (4-1, 1-4, 2-3 and 3-0) and in which the “fear” of the Basque team was established from Montilivi.

In this season, that of Eibar’s relegation and in which the Basques were one of the favorites to ascend, as they have shown by being in direct promotion in 14 of the last 15 days, Girona has not been able to with Eibar either. Míchel’s team beat Almería in the Mediterranean Games and drew in Zorrilla, but against the only team in the top three against which Eibar has not been able to score, with whom lost 4-2 in Ipurúa and 0-1 in Montilivi.
