The Golden Globes gala wanted to redeem itself from the accusations for lack of diversity by choosing the artist Jerrod Carmichael, black and gay, as presenter of some awards that this year celebrated their 80th edition. “I’m here because I’m black,” he said in his opening monologue for a gala that crowned the house of the dragon in the series section y The Fabelmans y Banshees by Inisherin on the movie category.

The presence of black leads grew when Eddie Murphy took the stage to collect the Cecil B. Demile Award in recognition of his 46-year career. The actor thanked the award and mentioned his closest loved ones, but also took the opportunity to remember the viral moment that starred in another awards ceremony, the Oscars, last year, when Will Smith hit Chris Rock.
Murphy set out to offer a series of tips for “actor dreamers” starting their careers. “I want you to know that there is a scheme to follow for success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind. It is a scheme that I have followed throughout my career. It is very simple, you just have to do these three things: pay your taxes, mind your own business and get the name of Will Smith’s wife out of your fucking mouths,” he snapped, paraphrasing the phrase the actor yelled before jumping on stage to slap Rock with his slap.

That was not the only reference to Will Smith for that altercation that was about to end his career and that, in a way, has meant a before and after for the popular actor. Returning from one of the commercial breaks, host Jerrod Carmichael said that during the commercial break, Smith had been awarded the ‘Rock Hudson Award’ for “the best representation of masculinity on television”.
Eddie Murphy shares three pieces of advice for up-and-comers in the industry:
1) Pay your taxes.
2) Mind your business.
3) Keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your f—ing mouth.https://t.co/YDe7QBg9R9 pic.twitter.com/1iH3iHGBiz Variety (@Variety) January 11, 2023
