Dennis Smith Jr. signs for Real Madrid until the end of the season

MADRID, 16 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

American point guard Dennis Smith Jr. became a new Real Madrid player this Thursday, reaching an agreement with the white club until the end of the current season, after seven seasons in the NBA, according to a statement from the Madrid entity.

“Real Madrid has reached an agreement with Dennis Smith Jr., an American point guard who remains linked to the club until the end of this season,” the entity reported on its website, where he was already wearing the number ‘4’ of his new shirt.

Chosen in ninth place in the 2017 draft by the Dallas Mavericks, Dennis Smith Jr. was part of the second best rookie quintet in his first season in the North American league, averaging 15.2 points per game in that first year, the best of his career in the United States.

After his time in Dallas, where he coincided in his second season with Luka Doncic, he played for the New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets and Brooklyn Nets, completing seven seasons in the NBA before signing for Real Madrid.

In his last year with the Nets, his averages were 6.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.2 steals in 18.9 minutes of play per game in 56 games. In this 2024-2025 season, he was relegated to the G-League with the Wisconsin Herd.

The point guard, 27 years old and 1.88 meters tall, will reinforce the direction of the game – although he can also play as a shooting guard – for the team coached by Chus Mateo. Thus, he will be the competition of the Argentine Facundo Campazzo, in a position where Sergio Llull and Andrés Feliz also appear, hampered by an injury to the plantar fascia at the start of the season.
