González achieved 38% of the votes of the federations that make up European Aquatics (LEN) while the Italian Giorgio Minisini, last year’s winner, had the support of the public with 40.9%. In the end, González won with 35.75% of the combined total of votes, ahead of Minisini by less than 2% and fellow Spaniard Fernando Díaz del Río.
