Spanish tennis player Alejandro Davidovich beat Croatian Borna Coric (6-7(5), 6-0, 7-5) to overcome a hard-fought debut at the Indian Wells tournament, the first Masters 1,000 of the season, a premiere in which Pablo Andújar and Roberto Carballés said goodbye.
Davidovich had to work hard to come back to a Coric who returned to play a year after a major shoulder injury. The young Croatian stood up this Thursday to win an even first set but then he lacked energy to finish.
The second set was a donut for the Spanish, while Coric caught his breath for the third set. There, Davidovich pressed more on the rest, but the Croatian broke him at a critical moment. Coric had 5-3 and served, but four games in a row for the man from Malaga brought him to the second round against Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
Meanwhile, Andújar was the first Spaniard to say goodbye to the event in the Californian desert, which returns to its traditional calendar in March in 2022, when he fell (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) to Fabio Fognini. The Italian put a 6-1 in direct duels with the Spanish and will face Nikoloz Basilashvili in the second round.
The first set went to Cuenca not without a fight, since he came back from a ‘break’ against and saved four balls 4-1. Andújar took advantage of the Italian’s classic disconnection to win the opening set with five games in a row, but Fognini did not lose his serve again and focused on a solid comeback.
