Dani Alves’s reaction after learning that he will continue in jail: fasting and vow of silence

The decision of the judge of the Court of Barcelona to keep the former soccer player in preventive detention has fallen like a jug of cold water on Dani Alves. His lawyer Christopher Martellhas communicated the bad news to him early this Tuesday and the defendant’s reaction has been that of a completely defeated man: he has not wanted to leave his cell all day.

Alves, who has been in jail for a month accused of a crime of rape, has taken refuge in his room completely alone and in silence. According to four a day, the Brazilian has not said a word all day nor has he eaten, since he has not appeared in the common dining room at lunchtime. Some colleagues have tried to encourage him without success and have told him that other prisoners had made a cheer, betting on whether he would be released from prison this Tuesday or not, something that has bothered Alves a lot.

There is no appeal against the resolution of the Court to keep Dani Alves in preventive detention. However, in the future the defense of the former Barcelona player accused of sexual assault may again request the release of his client. The maximum period established by law in which Dani Alves can remain in pretrial detention is two years, extendable to another two, that is, the footballer could spend up to four years in prison without trial.

The Brazilian’s defense, headed by Martell, has stated in a statement that “He is still as innocent as he was before the decision was issued” and has denied the risk of flight in which the Prosecutor’s Office and the prosecution have an impact: “His willingness to leave Spain and avoid the process was and is non-existent.”
