Kirby was named Super League Women’s Player of the Season last year, but the 28-year-old hasn’t played soccer since February this year. Kirby’s latest setback casts doubt on her participation in the European Championship, which will host England in July.
“She’s been suffering a lot from fatigue,” Hayes told reporters ahead of Chelsea’s FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal on Sunday. “I don’t have a definite reason why that is, we don’t know. Forget about the athlete, she’s just a human being and she’s struggling and we have to get to the bottom of that… We’re going through a weeding process to try and to figure out what he’s fighting for.
“From my perspective, this is not the first time, she has been competing for many years. What I know is that she is not available for club or country and will not be for the foreseeable future.”
Kirby, who previously spent more than nine months out after being diagnosed with a heart condition in late 2019, said it was time to put his health first. “It’s time to put health first. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to message, I’m doing my best to try and get back one more time,” Kirby wrote on Twitter.
