The 70 year reign of Isabel II mark an era. Throughout this 2022, the Prince of Wales has been assuming prominence due to the condition of his heir and has sometimes replaced the sovereign, as in the solemn opening of Parliament in May. The ceremony left us an image for history, which had not been produced since 1963: the absence of the monarch and, in her place, her son.

That day the Prince of Wales assumed all the protagonism. It was one more step towards the path of succession. The significant absence of the 96-year-old monarch was picked up by all the world’s media. Isabel II, who had overcome Covid, suffered from mobility problems typical of her age. In June she presided over her events for her Platinum Jubilee.
On the occasion of his 70th anniversary on the throne, the Queen prepared this message: “Looking to the future with confidence.” They were the five words that she chose and that sounded like continuity. In this statement, accompanied by an official portrait (photo above), the Head of State launched a direct statement that she permeated the open debate on her succession. The Queen invited the British “to reflect on all that has been achieved during the last seventy years” and she added that solemn “as we look to the future with confidence and enthusiasm”. On that horizon is Charles of England, her son, and Camilla, as queen consort. Isabel thus built bridges, preparing the way for her successor and paving the way.
