Charles III’s gift to his brother Eduardo for his 59th birthday: “New Duke of Edinburgh!”

“I wish the new Duke of Edinburgh a very happy birthday today!” They have been the concise words that Buckingham Palace has chosen to announce, on behalf of Charles IIIthe new title of Edward of England. The monarch has chosen the date of the Earl of Wessex’s 59th birthday to make it official.

“The King has conferred the Duchy of Edinburgh on his brother, Prince Edward, on his 59th birthday,” reads the palace tweet.

Eduardo thus picks up the baton from his father, who was Duke of Edinburgh for 60 years. When he married, in 1999, with Sofia her parents promised her that she would inherit the title upon her father’s death. Two years have passed since the death of the duke, in 2021, in the midst of a pandemic.

A year later, in September 2022, the queen died Isabel II. This new appointment implies more changes of tiles on the board. Edward and Sofia, until now Earls of Wessex, become Dukes.
