The countdown begins to learn UEFA's final verdict regarding the Women's Champions League. The European football body will give its decision tomorrow, after its executive committee, with all eyes on Bilbao and San Sebastián. Both Spanish cities are running as the venue to host the final to eight that are being considered to resume the Champions League, suspended since the end of March due to the health crisis of COVID-19. In the absence of officiality and except for last minute surprise, the maximum continental competition will head to the Basque Country, as AS has learned.
The main idea would be a final to eight disputed between the two Basque cities, being the final in Anoeta or San Mamés, for a week. The chosen date aims to be at the end of August, specifically from 21 to 29 of this month. In this way, the quarterfinals will be played on August 21 and 22 and the semifinals on August 26, with the final remaining on Sunday 30. In principle, it would be behind closed doors, but everything depends on what the Spanish Government decides at the time.
The maximum European competition was suspended in the quarterfinals with the following pending double-match qualifiers: Barça-Atlético; Wolfsburg-Glasgow; PSG-Arsenal and Bayern-Lyon. Of these participants, only Wolfsburg and Bayern have resumed their national competition. For their part, England (Arsenal), France (PSG and Lyon) and Spain (Atleti and Barça) have their Leagues suspended and Scotland has yet to report its final decision.
In the case of the Spanish teams, both Atlético and Barça have returned to training and expect to know the final position of UEFA. Both Spanish teams will meet in a historic European quarter-final tie that will ensure a Spanish representative in the semifinals. It should be remembered that the Catalans are the current European runners-up and they will go for it in this edition of the Champions League, after winning the League and the Spanish Super Cup. While, the continental tournament is presented as Atlético's last bullet who, after winning three consecutive Leagues, is signing a season of doubts.
