Carreno retires in his Winston-Salem semi-final

MADRID, 24 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Spanish tennis player Pablo Carreño failed to qualify for the final of the ATP tournament in Winston-Salem (United States) which is played on hard courts, after having to retire due to physical discomfort after losing the first set and going down a break in the second against American Alex Michelsen.

The Asturian player was looking for his first final since the Masters 1000 in Montreal (Canada) in 2022, but could not continue playing at the start of the second set against the 19-year-old American, against whom he had had his best chance in the first.

The tennis player from Gijón managed two consecutive breaks to go 5-2 and serve, but was unable to close the set or even have a chance after receiving four games in a row. Carreño managed to save the tie-break, but there he could not beat Michelsen (7/5).

In the second, after losing his serve at 1-1, the Spaniard decided not to continue, probably in order not to risk his presence at the US Open, the fourth and final ‘Grand Slam’ of the season that begins this coming Monday.
