Carreño and Bucsa advance in Winston-Salem and Cleveland and Munar says goodbye in his debut

MADRID, 20 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Spanish tennis players Pablo Carreño and Cristina Bucsa advanced this Monday in the tournaments of Winston-Salem and Cleveland (United States), respectively, after defeating the American Omni Kumar (6-2, 6-0) and the Italian Martina Trevisan (6-2, 6-4), while Jaume Munar said goodbye in the first of them against the Belgian David Goffin (7-5, 4-6, 6-3).

In Winston-Salem, an ATP 250 event held on hard courts, Carreño needed less than an hour to defeat the local player. Two breaks in the first and seventh games were enough to win the first set.

In the second round, the Asturian gave his opponent a ‘donut’ and signed a victory that allows him to meet the Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko, thirteenth seed of the North American tournament, in the next round.

Munar, on the other hand, said goodbye to the same tournament after losing to Goffin, who took the lead by winning the first set. With a solitary break, the Balearic player tied the match, but, after going ahead 2-0 in the third set, the Belgian managed three breaks that eliminated the Spaniard.

Meanwhile, Bucsa, who won bronze at Paris 2024 alongside Sara Sorribes, also surpassed her debut in Cleveland, in the WTA 250 category and also held on a hard court. After overcoming two break points against her, the Spaniard linked five consecutive games won to take the opening set.

The 1-4 deficit in the second set forced her to come back, something she achieved with two consecutive breaks, which give her the ticket to the second round where the winner of the duel between the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia and the Swiss Viktorija Golubic awaits her.
