Carlos Saura: from his seven children to Lali, his “travel companion”

Carlos Saura He received the Goya de Honor 2023 a few days ago. The filmmaker died just one day before the 37th edition of the Goya Awards was held in Seville. He has died at the age of 91, due to respiratory failure. He leaves behind his “travel companion”, Lali, and her seven children, the fruit of four different marriages.

Director of Oh, Carmela!, was born on January 4, 1932 in Huesca. In his adolescence he dedicated himself to photography and also wanted to be an industrial engineer, but, advised by his brother, he entered the School of Cinematography. His career began in the 1960s with The gulfs.

With Mercedes Pérez he formed his second marriage, from which they were born Manuel, Adrian y Diego between 1984 and 1987. They said ‘yes, I want’ in a civil ceremony attended by figures such as Marisol and Antonio Gades. The love broke up in the early 90s.

On October 6, the Academy announced its Goya de Honor. “Thanks to the Academy, I receive this award with great joy and enthusiasm. I am 90 years old and I will be 91 in January and there are more than 50 films, including feature films and documentaries, that have filled a large part of my life as a professional: the other one has been my six sons and my daughter Anna”, she thanked in a letter that two of her children, Antonio and Anna herself, read at the Academy. That October 6, Saura did not go to the Film Academy in Madrid, suffering from the fall for which he did not attend the San Sebastián Film Festival weeks ago. “I have been lucky in life to do what attracted me the most and I hope to continue doing it. I give thanks to life, which has given me so much,” he conveyed.
