Carballés, Ramos, Verdasco and Feli, out in the first round

Roberto Carballés will not be able to repeat or improve on the result he achieved last year at Roland Garros when he reached the third round. The player born in Tenerife 28 years ago could not overcome this time in his debut Mikael Ymer, who rallied 2-1 to win by 6-4, 0-6, 4-6, 6-2 and 6-2 in 3:36. The Swede, ranked 22nd and 105th in the world, will face Gael Monfils.

Carballés is the second Spanish tennis player to be eliminated by Ymer in a Grand Slam this year, after defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the second round of the Australian Open. He had never faced Roberto, who had just won Monfils in Belgrade, where he reached the quarterfinals from the previous one. Ymer played very aggressively and with his 45 winners he countered the 66 unforced errors he made during the five sets. Carballés was not helped at all by his serve.

Ramos cannot with Monfils

Albert Ramos, the player who accumulates the most wins (17) on clay this year together with Tsitsipas and Delbonis, saw the Frenchman Gael Monfils, supported by the audience of the Suzanne Lenglen, rallied to win by 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 and 6-4 in three hours. Monfils undermined the resistance of the Catalan, who had serious options to take a lead of two sets, with 60 winners. And despite the fact that at certain times he was tired and even asked for medical time-out, he was able to get into the game and increase his benefits carried by the enthusiastic stands. Ramos stays one step below his 2020 result, while the Parisian does exceed the premiere, unlike in 2020 and will see Mikael Ymer.

Verdasco does not take off

Fernando Verdasco also fell in his debut at Roland Garros this year, against German Philipp Kohlschreiber, 7-6 (3), 6-2, 2-6 and 6-4 in 2:52. The Madrilenian, who is trying to be competitive again on the circuit, cannot find a way and needs more games to try to regain the level he had before his knees were operated at the end of last year. The 37-year-old veteran duel was taken by the German, more successful with the serve and in the ball treatment. Verdasco racked up 49 unforced errors. Kohlschreiber will face Russian Karatsev, who annulled American qualifier Brooksby (6-3, 6-4, 6-4).

Felicianco says goodbye to his 77th Grand Slam

Feliciano López could not extend the 77th Grand Slam of his career, 76th in a row, a record figure on the circuit that he will probably extend at Wimbledon. The Toledo said goodbye to the tournament in which he has participated, with this, 21 times, against the Argentine Federico Coria (29 years old and 94th in the world), who beat him by 6-3, 7-6 (4) and 6-2 in 1h: 58. Feli made three times more errors than his rival (18-46) and did not take advantage of his greater expertise with the service. He was close to scoring the second sleeve, with a break advantage, but let it escape in the tiebreaker. Coria, who reached the third round in Paris last year, will face Italy's Berrettini in the second.
