Carballés can't beat Shelton in the Auckland quarterfinals

MADRID, 11 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish tennis player Roberto Carballés could not qualify this Thursday for the semifinals of the Auckland tournament (New Zealand), scoring for the ATP and which is played on a hard court, when he fell clearly against the American Ben Shelton in two sets 6-4, 6-3.

The Tenerife native had a tough task in the quarter-finals of the New Zealand event as he faced the first seed, a semi-finalist last year in the United States Open, against whom the rest did not take advantage of his options.

Carballés only took advantage of one of the eight breaking balls he had in the match, and although he was able to counteract the early 'break' he received, he forgave three options to break and take the lead and paid dearly because Shelton did not let his opportunity with 5-4 up to take the set.

In the second, the Spanish tennis player also failed to take advantage of two breaking points at 2-2 and the American broke again in the final stages to get his ticket to the semifinals of one of the tournaments that serves as a prelude to the Australian Open that starts next Sunday.
