Camilo Villarino, director of Josep Borrell's Cabinet in the EU, appointed new Head of the Royal Household

Zarazuela announced this Friday the appointment of Camilo Villarino March as the new Head of the Royal Household. The diplomat will take over from Jaime Alfonsinwho has been the right hand of Philip VI for almost 30 years. “His Majesty the King, in accordance with the provisions of article 65.2 of the Constitution, has made the decision to relieve Don Jaime Alfonsín Alfonso as Head of His House and appoint Don Camilo Villarino Marzo to that position, which will take to take effect throughout the next month of February,” reads the statement.

“Don Jaime Alfonsín Alfonso has spent almost thirty years at the service of His Majesty King Felipe VI, first as Head of His Secretariat (1995-2014), while Prince of Asturias, and then as Head of His Household (2014-2024) after His proclamation before the Cortes Generales. His Majesty wishes to continue counting on your valuable and loyal advice, for which he will appoint you as a Privy Councilor and, in this capacity, he will continue to provide you with the advice you require and will carry out the functions entrusted to him,” they add.

Mr. Camilo Villarino Marzo is currently Chief of Staff of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Member of the Diplomatic Career since 1989, he has been Director of the Cabinet of successive Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Spain between the years 2017 and 2021. Throughout his professional career he has also held various responsibilities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Union European Union and Cooperation, inside and outside Spain.

Villarino Marzo (59), a native of Zaragoza and father of three daughters, also has several decorations, such as the Medal of Military Merit with a different target (2021), number commander of the Order of Isabel la Católica (2019) and the Cross of Silver of the Order of Merit of the Civil Guard (2015).
