Broncano’s laziness delays his premiere, angers TVE and compromises the viability of the program

Without reaching 40 years of age and with money in your pocket, enjoying a long vacation is a pleasure that is not easy to give up. For David Broncano, getting out of bed early, work-wise, is not easy. That is what has happened to the comedian imposed by Pedro Sánchez on TVE to compete with Pablo Motos and his collaborators: they have preferred to stretch out the summer instead of sacrificing a few days of vacation to advance their premiere ahead of The AnthillThat’s what Carlos Latre did on Telecinco. It didn’t go well for him, but at least he can’t be blamed for not trying.

David Broncano presents this Wednesday at the FesTVal in Vitoria its new program, La Revuelta, the space that seeks to make a place for itself in a very competitive slot in which very consolidated formats such as EAnthill 3.0 and other spaces such as First Dates o The Intermediate.

There are those on Spanish Television who are fuming against Broncano, who has refused to cut short his vacation as they have done Pablo Motoswho has not stopped working during the summer and has had the best start to the season for his program, or Carlos Latre, whose only recent success was moving up the premiere of Babylon Show to August 26.

The Revolt, which will delay the start of prime time on La 1 even further, boasted on Monday of not having a logo (a symptom of the lack of work by Broncano and company). The reason? The name was decided at the end of the summer after having been registered on August 12 by Broncano’s representative, Fernando Bonelli. Broncano has been boasting for years about not preparing his projects: in Modern life of the SER boasted of going ‘bare’ to Gran Vía 32 and in The Resistance from Movistar Plus+ made jokes about not knowing who the guest on duty was or his/her resume.

The problem now is that, if the audiences on TVE do not respond, he has many ‘enemies’ who will be waiting for him with the scythe. Political interference from La Moncloa in favor of his signing, The 14 million euros that RTVE will pay per season and the facilities it has received to stay on the air, since they only ask for a 7.5% share, have made it lose sympathy. And then there is the cost: the poor argument that is repeated in favour of Broncano is that it is a strip of Four Stars It is more expensive, without considering that this is precisely the problem, that TVE paid too much for a space that could have been much less costly for the public treasury. On the other hand, how many workers will be able to earn a salary from Broncano’s programme and how many salaries did Daniel Écija pay for the fiction? Ten times more? Twenty times more?

Humble or scoundrel?

Not to mention the two-year contract imposed (they wanted three) or that the controversial and scandalous signing meant the departure of the previous president and her number 2. The communicator has long played at showing one humble personality and the other a scoundrel. After winning the second version, Broncano could have a hard time jumping from niche to mainstream. The delay in the start of Broncano’s season has left the game bogged down Prince Theatre Gran Via, which will remain the home of the showman and his companions Ricardo Castella, Jorge Ponce, Grison, Ernesto Sevilla, Pablo Ibarburu, Valeria Ros and Antonio Resines. The Revolt He lacks collaborators, just as it happened to The Resistance, and also live, since there is fear in the team that some verbal slip-up by their guests or collaborators could further tense the atmosphere. Another fear circulating among TVE’s top brass is that the false live broadcast (the programme is recorded) will detract from the freshness of Pablo Motos, who is live.

Broncano, the comedian who angered the PSOE, PP, Podemos, Vox and IU

Broncano’s transgression in the early hours of SER or Movistar Plus+, and his controversial signing for TVE, have left him with a trail of political enemies. The PP cried out against his incorporation into TVE with such a controversial contract. “What we are seeing in recent weeks in relation to RTVE is the dynamiting of the neutrality of all institutions. Anyone who had any doubts about RTVE, with this contract and the way it has materialised, no longer has any,” he said. Cuca Gamarra. The PP secretary general warned that she was analysing how the contract was contracted and announced that they would act “accordingly when we have this analysis”.

“With those 28 million euros “Two thirds of the cost of the ELA law could have been financed, something that Spanish society is demanding; or 1,400 Parkinson’s patients could be treated; or 300 complete cancer treatments could be financed. We could even be providing the Civil Guard in Cadiz with the patrol boats it needs. That would be governing for the Spanish people and not blowing up the institutions and independent organisations to put them at their service,” he said.

Podemos and IU have also been upset by some aspects of the signing. The minister Roberto Lakidain, proposed by the purple party, asked RTVE that Broncano use public resources to save external costs. And Jose Manuel Martin Medem, of the PCE, demanded that the showman only be hired for one season and that his continued presence on the schedule be related to his audience levels.

Broncano was also the subject of political debate in 2019 for giving room to The Resistance comedian Iggy Rubin, who mocked Vox founder José Antonio Ortega Lara for being kidnapped by ETA.

“We must never underestimate the extent of human cruelty. How far does human cruelty go? It’s impossible to know. Years later he founded a party, called it Vox, and no one told him what it means in English?” he said, referring to box. “I know it’s with a V! The ceiling of the hole was very low and there was no room for a B. Be very careful about giving a seat to Ortega Lara, he’ll make himself a loft!” he added.

Movistar Plus+ withdrew the entire programme and stated that “the monologue by Iggy Rubin, a guest on the programme La Resistencia, does not comply with the principles of Movistar Plus+. As a result, it has been immediately removed from all platforms. We deeply regret the damage it has caused and we apologise for it.”

Broncano was in favour of Rubin: “He couldn’t be a better person. If those who have made him a bloodthirsty animal spent an afternoon with him, I’m sure they would invite him to their house on Christmas Eve and include him in their inheritance, given the human magnitude of the boy.”

“However, I am amazed at the impetus and fury with which a joke is attacked and judged, even if it hurts you, when we hear such barbarities every day at every meeting, and these are not funny, eh… I know that Movistar has not acted in this way because of pressure from anyone. There has been pressure with a thousand other jokes we have made and they have never said anything to us,” he said.

The previous year, the PSOE in Huelva had already protested against the jokes made on SER’s La vida moderna about the city. “It is a great achievement to be a champion, being from Huelva. You shouldn’t mess with Huelva too much, they already have enough of them,” said Ignatius Farray to the laughter of Broncano.

SER stated that “despite there being an ongoing debate about the limits of humour, which could contextualise this episode, the mere fact that a single person feels offended by comments made on this programme obliges Cadena SER to apologise for it.”
