Bilbao City Council is “sure” to host the Eurocup in 2021

The Bilbao city council has full confidence that the Biscayan capital is one of the venues of the Euro Cup that has been postponed until 2021 due to the Covid-19 health crisis. This was stated today by the Councilor for Economic Development, Xabier Ochandiano. The mayor said that UEFA will confirm this week the venues of the tournament and that they are “sure” that San Mamés will be one of them.

Remember that Aleksander Ceferin, president of UEFA, affirmed beIN Sports that they had had conversations with nine cities “and that everything is ready”, but that with the other three “we have some problems”. As a result, federal sources assured Mundo Deportivo that Bilbao remains the venue for the Eurocup.

Ochandiano has pointed out that the competition will continue to be called ‘Eurocopa 2020’, despite the fact that it will take place in 2021, between June 11 and July 11. Precisely today, when Bilbao celebrates 720 years since its founding as a town, the first game of the Spanish team of the three that will host the Athletic field was scheduled to be played.

This councilor added that the city council chaired by Juan Mari Aburto It has worked intensively to ensure that the city is confirmed as the headquarters and has specified the budget for the celebration of the Euro in Bilbao, valued at 5.5 million euros: two from the City Council itself, another two contributed by UEFA through the Spanish Federation and 1.5 million divided equally between the Basque Government and the Provincial Government of Bizkaia.
