Biden defends equal pay in soccer for men and women

Joe Biden, the newly elected president of the United States, is a proselytizer of football, of soccer as the beautiful game is called in America. He has been passionate about football since his sons started playing it in a Delaware County league.

Biden did not play soccer in his childhood and youth in Pennsylvania and Delaware. The Democrat played football. But his sons Beau and Hunter started playing football, soccer, wow, at age five in a Delaware County league and Joe Biden saw first-hand, as a father who takes his children to training sessions and games, the growth of youth soccer in the 1970s in the United States, as explained in an article by the American website SoccerAmerica.com .

As Vice President of the United States during the presidency of Barak Obama, Joe Biden was America's number one soccer ambassador. In 2010 he presided over the opening game of the MLS Philadelphia Union-D. C. United. And then he attended three of the four World Cups (two men and two women) that were held during the eight years of the Obama administration.

The only World Cup he did not attend was the Women's World Cup held in Germany in 2011. His wife, Jill Biden, and Chelsea Clinton attended as representatives of the US government, and both represented the United States, along with Ambassador Phil Murphy (now Governor of New Jersey and owner of the National Woman Soccer League's Sky Blue FC).

Joe Biden took several of his grandchildren with him on soccer trips, including Maisy Biden, who graduated in 2019 from Sidwell Friends, where she was a goalkeeper for the varsity soccer team and also an outstanding lacrosse player.

The new president will contribute his experience during the preparation of the United States to co-host the 2026 World Cup with Canada and Mexico And, if he fulfills a second term, he would be president during the celebration of the second World Cup that is going to be played in the United States after the one held in 1994.

Joe Biden demonstrated his support for the United States women's soccer team in their fight for equal pay with male soccer players. Last May, Biden tweeted this message to the US federation: “Equal pay now. Or else, when I'm president, you can go elsewhere to get funding for the World Cup,” referring to the 2026 World Cup.
