Belgium changes plans for fear of Covid-19

The Belgian team has changed its travel plans for the rest of the Eurocup group stage due to concerns about the Covid-19 situation in Russia, the country's Football Federation said on Monday.

The Belgians were to travel from Copenhagen after Thursday's Group B game against Denmark to Saint Petersburg and spend three days in that city preparing for the clash against Finland next Monday.

However, they have decided to return from Copenhagen to their base in Tubize, about 25 kilometers from Brussels, and only move to Saint Petersburg the day before the game.

“During our recent stay in Saint Petersburg we experienced that spending a few days abroad in a hotel in a big city during the times of COVID is much more complex and difficult than before,” said a statement from the Belgian Federation.

Belgium went to St. Petersburg on Friday, the day before beating Russia 3-0 in the Euro Cup debut and flying back to Brussels on Sunday.

“The Belgian federation has been forced to take this action to protect its players and staff (…) Players will train in Tubize, in a safer environment against COVID and with the best possible training conditions.”
