MADRID, 6 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Former German tennis player Boris Becker announced this Tuesday that he will stop training Holger Rune “with immediate effect” due to “professional and private responsibilities” incompatible with the Danish tennis player's schedule, after having worked together for less than four months.
“I will be stepping down as Holger Rune's head coach with immediate effect. We started this partnership with the initial goal of reaching the ATP Finals at the end of last year; but then I realized that, for this to be successful, I would need to be available for Holger much more than I can,” Becker said on X (former Twitter).
“Due to professional and private responsibilities, I cannot now give Holger what he needs. I wish him the best and will always be his number one fan. I have truly appreciated this journey together,” the three-time German Wimbledon champion concluded in his message.
The German had been working with Rune officially since October 19, 2023, following a drop in performance. Although the Dane improved his performance and qualified for those ATP Finals, held in Turin (Italy), he was eliminated in the group stage.
Becker had achieved success in the past as a coach, when he helped Serbian Novak Djokovic win several titles between 2013 and 2016. However, his alliance with Rune did not bear the expected results, in a job that was the first for the German at the level. professional since his release from prison in December 2022.
On the recent Australian tour, Rune reached the final of the ATP 250 tournament in Brisbane and subsequently fell in the second round of the Australian Open, against Frenchman Arthur Cazaux. Absent from all those appointments were both Becker and the Swiss coach Severin Luthi, who last week also broke off relations with Rune.
