MADRID, 12 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Tottenham Hotspur will be the rival of FC Barcelona in the 58th edition of the Joan Gamper Trophy, which will be held on August 8 at 8:00 p.m., at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, as announced by the Barça club in a statement on Wednesday.
The English team will be the guest for the first match of Xavi Hernández’s team at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, on August 8 at 8:00 p.m. In this way, the team led by the Australian Ange Postecoglou will be the last test for the Catalans before the start of the official competition, against Getafe just five days later -on August 13-.
It will be the second time that Tottenham has played the Gamper, becoming the first English team to repeat, although they did not play against Barça in their debut in the tournament. In 1986, the Londoners made their debut in the Barça Trophy, when the structure of the tournament, with four teams, was divided into two semifinals and one final. Spurs lost to PSV and did not advance to the title game, while Barcelona beat Milan and ended up beating the Dutch.
In addition, up to five other English teams have played in the Gamper: Ipswich Town (1981), Nottingham Forest (1983), Aston Villa (1984), Manchester City (2009) and Arsenal (2019).
This 58th edition of the Gamper will be the third to host the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, after in 1990 and 1996 they were held on the Montjuic mountain, due to changes to the pitch at the Camp Nou.
