MADRID, 15 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Spanish basketball coach Álex Mumbrú officially became the new coach of Germany, the reigning world champion, on Thursday after his last stint at Valencia Basket.
The rumours of the past few days were finally confirmed with the official announcement from the German Basketball Federation, on the same day as the Spaniard’s presentation in Berlin. “We were looking for a national coach who was hungry, competent and highly motivated and who could show that he really wanted to work with the team,” said DBB president Ingo Weiss.
“Alex Mumbrú quickly convinced us of this. He has had an impressive and highly successful playing career and has also gained experience at the highest European level as a coach in Bilbao and Valencia,” added the German basketball manager.
Mumbrú thus accepts a major challenge on the bench, for the first time outside Spain, taking the reins of a world champion, a Germany that in the recent Olympic Games in Paris 2024 fell in the semi-finals against France. The Catalan coach spent the last two years at Valencia Baket.
“I would like to thank them for their trust and I am very excited to have the opportunity to be the coach of one of the best national teams in the world. My great wish is to help German basketball and quickly become part of the German basketball family,” said Mumbrú at his presentation.
“I still have a long time to wait for the first training session with my new team, but there is still a lot to do until then. I am very happy and ready to start working in German basketball,” he added.
