Pogacar finishes third in a first stage in which Enric Mas had to leave after a fall
MADRID, 1 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
British cyclist Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) has become the first leader of the 110th edition of the Tour de France after winning the opening stage, 182 kilometers of medium mountain starting and finishing in Bilbao, in a beautiful finish with his brother Simon Yates (Team Jayco AlUla), all in a disastrous day for the Spanish Enric Mas (Movistar), forced to leave due to a fall.
The two brothers attacked on the descent of Pike Bidea and opened up a ten second lead on the pursuers, commanded by the Jumbo-Visma. Just 300 meters from the finish line in the Biscayan city, Adam dropped Simon to take the win, the bonus ten seconds and the yellow jersey.
The runners will continue this Sunday the gala round through Basque lands with the dispute of the second stage, also of medium mountains and with up to five ports -one of the second category, two of the third and two of the fourth- in the 208.9 kilometers between Vitoria -Gasteiz and San Sebastian.
