Zidane ends his second spell at Real Madrid and leaves the white club as the second coach with the most titles in white history: he has accumulated 11 winches as a Madrid coach (two Leagues, three Champions League, two European Super Cups, two Club World Cups, two Spanish Super Cups). Only Miguel Muñoz surpasses him with 14 glasses to his credit, although with a significantly greater time on the bench than Zizou: He was Madrid coach for 14 consecutive years.
Zidane accumulates four complete seasons (2016-17, 2017-18, 2019-20 and 2020-21) and two incomplete ones (2015-16, since January 2016; and 2018-19, since March 2019). In his first stretch as a white coach, he accumulated the vast majority of his successes, including the three consecutive Champions League; In the second he could only add a Spanish Super Cup and a League, and closed the 2020-21 season without titles despite the fact that Madrid fought until the end for the League (he lacked a goal from Valladolid against Atleti to lift the title) and he was a semi-finalist in the Champions League.
The Copa del Rey has been the only trophy that has eluded him: he fell in the quarterfinals in 2016-17 (he was eliminated by Celta), also in the quarterfinals in 2017-18 (Leganés), in the quarterfinals once more in 2019 -20 (Real Sociedad) and in 2020-21 he hit the big bang, being eliminated in the round of 32 by a Second B like Alcoyano. Two of those eliminations, those that happened against Leganés and Alcoyano, had specific weight in the two marches of Zidane, as they are indicative of the wear and tear that the group had been suffering and of the Frenchman's inability to continue getting the most out of it.
A changing room behind his coach
Zidane ended his first stage at Madrid just a few days after winning his third consecutive Champions League, surprisingly and catching everyone with a different foot. This time he does it after finishing the season without titles, the first time it has happened to Madrid since the 2009-10 academic year, and after having issued signs that he was not going to continue for weeks. In the white club it was taken for granted that Zizou was going to leave the position, despite the fact that he had a contract until June 2022; Some footballers' concern about losing the coach who has given Madrid the most success in its modern age had also leaked into the locker room.
The Marseillais has formed a close relationship with most of the heavyweights in the dressing room, having conflicts on very few occasions (Bale, Ceballos, Isco …). Zidane is leaving Madrid for the third time, giving up a one-year contract: he already did so as a player and in his first stage as a coach. And to his successes as the first coach of the team must be added those he achieved in the course in which he was second to Carlo Ancelotti, in 2013-14, the season in which they won the Copa del Rey and the Tenth Champions League against Atlético in Lisbon. In total, Zidane has coached Madrid in 263 games, of which he won 172, drew 55 and lost 36.
