This Friday the Geneva ATP 250 draw was held (May 17 to 23), the tournament that returns to the Swiss city 30 years later and in which Roger Federer will reappear to make his debut on land this course. The Swiss has chosen the tournament held in his country to prepare for his participation in Roland Garros after having played only two games so far this year in Doha, with a win against Daniel Evans and a loss against Nikoloz Basilashvili at the beginning of March. He was coming out of a double knee operation and preferred to continue training rather than force himself to compete without being fully recovered and in shape. For a few days he has already been working to prepare his return on clay.
A Spaniard, Pablo Andújar, can be the first opponent of the winner of 20 Grand Slams if he defeats Australian Jordan Thompson in the first round. The 35-year-old 76th in the world from Cuenca has never faced Federer and now has a nice opportunity to do so in the last stretch of his career. Roger will probably start Wednesday in the second round as he is the number one seed, and if he advances on his side of the table beyond Andújar or Thompson, by ranking Garín and Paire would wait for him before a hypothetical final against Shapovalov. A few days ago he said that he has the “desire to compete of a young man”.
Two other Spaniards play at the Gonet Geneva Open, Feliciano López and Fernando Verdasco, which will be released against rivals from the previous one. As the most prominent players aside from those already mentioned are Ruud, Dimitrov, Fognini and Mannarino.
