Former English international striker Frank Worthington, whom Gary Lineker described this Tuesday as “the hero of my childhood”, died on Monday night at the age of 72 after a long illness, as announced today by his family, Worthington, whose game was one of the most colorful of his time (to show his wonderful goal for Bolton against Ipswich Town), he played in more than 20 clubs between 1966 to 1991, including Huddersfield Town, Leicester, Bolton and Birmingham. Worthington scored 266 goals in 882 games in all competitions 22 22 leagues in a row between 1966 and 1987. He was capped 8 times for England in 1974 (and scored 2 goals).
His most famous goal was scored for Bolton against Ipswich Town in 1979, when he juggled the ball on his back before sending it over the defense to score with a left-handed volley.
“It is with great sadness that we announce that soccer legend Frank Worthington passed away peacefully last night in a hospital in Huddersfield after a long illness,” said the former player's family. Former Barcelona player Lineker, who started his career at Leicester, wrote online that Worthington was “the hero of my childhood.” The former English international added: “A wonderful footballer, heterodox, with a wonderful character, so kind to me when I started.”
