The Portuguese, from the Brazilian fourth division, offers a rematch to Madrid half a century later

The Portuguese Sports Association, a club that plays in Series D of the Brazilian Championship (the fourth Brazilian division), has sent a letter to the president of Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez, to request that they dispute a friendly match in 2024. The Rio de Janeiro club was founded on December 17, 1924, so that game would be the central act of the program of celebrations of its centenary.

The Portuguesa is going through low hours nowadays, but at the time it was an important club in Brazil. The legendary Garrincha, considered the best winger in the history of football, played in its ranks, but it is also holds the honor of being the only Brazilian team to have beaten Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. This historical fact happened on September 4, 1969, when both entities played a friendly match at the White Coliseum. The victory fell to the Brazilian side by 1-2. La Portuguesa, as she explains to Florentino Pérez, the recipient of the letter, would take the opportunity to travel to Madrid for the heroes of that feat who are still alive.

The protagonists of that historic victory of the Portuguese against Madrid were: Bruno; Choquinho, Jerry, Beto, Zeca; Carlos Pedro, Nei; Jorginho, Miguel, Jurandir (Paulo Mata) and Escurinho.
