Kei Nishikori continues on his way to once again rub shoulders with the great rackets of world tennis. The Japanese wants to turn the page to some complicated years in which he has been far from his best level, especially in this 2020, where a wrist injury and contagion by coronavirus have prevented him from playing games.
To further this path back to the elite, Nishikori has developed a demanding start to the 2021 season in which he hopes to regain his best level. “My schedule for the start of 2021: ATP Cup (February 1), Australian Open (February 8), Rotterdam (March 1), Marseille (March 8), Dubai (March 15) and Miami (March 24)”.
Speaking to Nikkan Sports, Nishikori acknowledges that this path back to the tennis elite will be difficult given the level currently on the circuit. “I know I need time to get back into the Top-10. It took me half a year to feel better after my wrist injury. The Top-20 players are stronger It's been five years and sometimes I feel like Top-100 players are tough too. It won't be easy but I think I'll go back to the Top-10 if I play normally. “
The Japanese tennis player is clear about what style of tennis can help him to return to rub shoulders with the best. “If I play rock solid like Djokovic does, I can't do my best and I can't play as aggressive as Federer either. So my goal is to play somewhere between the two styles. I try to earn more points on the net and not just go online more often. “
Nishikori is also clear about his wish for 2021 after the ordeal suffered in 2020. “My motivation for tennis grows every year. For some reason I am more motivated and stronger. I didn't get to play many games this year so I really want to play games, win, win tournaments and also Grand Slam. “
