The media attention in Paraguay is focused this Monday on the former Barcelona player Ronaldinho, who will go to the Palace of Justice, in Asunción, to find out if the guarantee judge decrees his freedom, after almost half a year held in the South American country for the use of false passports .
Ronaldinho's brother, Roberto de Assis Moreira, will also be at the preliminary hearing before the guarantee judge, who was arrested along with the Brazilian star on March 4 at the Asunción airport, after arriving from Brazil.
It is up to the judge of guarantees to decide whether to decree his freedom, as requested by the Prosecutor's Office, or if he shows his disagreement with that request by giving an opposition procedure and this returns to the prosecutors of the case for a new ratification.
The case took a favorable turn for Ronaldinho the first week of this month, when the Prosecutor's Office, after presenting a document concluding the investigation, requested an abbreviated process for him and his brother, as well as the suspension of the process.
This means that the two brothers must acknowledge the facts, for which a two-year prison sentence is requested, which they will not serve if the process is suspended.
However, the two brothers should appear every three months before the Brazilian authorities and establish a domicile in that country.
In addition, and according to the request of the Prosecutor's Office, the former player would have to make a donation of $ 90,000 in reparation for social damages and his brother another $ 110,000 for the same concept.
The two brothers have already deposited in the state Bank of Development the sum of 1.6 million dollars as a guarantee to access home confinement, which since April 7 they have been serving in a luxurious hotel in the center of Asunción.
Ronaldinho came to Paraguay to participate in the opening of a casino and to lend his image to a free aid project for Paraguayan children.
The project was chaired by the Paraguayan businesswoman Dalia López, who received the two brothers at the airport and who is a fugitive and under an international arrest warrant.
The two brothers were arrested on the night of March 4 and until their home confinement they were incarcerated in a police unit that functions as a prison.
The investigation also hit several customs and immigration officials, allegedly implicated in the falsification of Paraguayan passports and identification cards used by the two brothers.
