When the five changes subtract more than add

Julen Lopetegui, Sevilla coach, acknowledged at the end of the match against Levante that his team tied in the last minutes when he seemed to have the victory in his pocket that making the five changes hurt overall performance in the last 15 minutes.

Diego Carlos's own goal subtracted two points from a team that would have shot at the table in third position with respect to their pursuers had they won in La Nucía, where Luuk de Jong's goal at the beginning of the second half and the subsequent control that Sevilla seemed to have of the match seemed to be sufficient.

But Lopetegui made three changes in a run in the 63rd minute putting Suso, Fernando and Óliver Torres on the field for Munir, one of the most outstanding players in the match and a luxury assistant on goal, Joan Jordán and Banega. Later, in Nesyri he left for De Jong and, finally, before the very active departure of Hernani on the right wing of Levante, the Basque coach opted to sit Ocampos and remove Reguilón, redoubling defensive tasks on a left wing in the who opted for a double side with Escudero.

The result is that Sevilla took an important step back after the last pass for hydration, Levante tied and could even come back if it were not for two interventions by Kounde saving a ball almost in the line and Vaclik in a shot from outside the area.

“The responsibility lies with the coach, surely, having the possibility of making five changes, at which point they have also tightened more. We have not known how to handle the situation. The way is to look for the second and we have not succeeded ”, acknowledged Lopetegui after the match.

Doubts have arisen again in a sector of the fans around the figure of Lopetegui and a certain tendency to defend a short advantage such as a 0-1 in the match, something that was also criticized, for example, in the appointment against Celta in Balaídos, when the team from Vigo traced a 0-1 and ended up winning 2-1.
