MADRID, 9 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Norwegian boxer John Cooney died on Saturday at age 28 by not being able to overcome the injuries suffered in the fight for the Celta Superpluma title against the Welshman Nathan Howells at the Belfast Hall Hall on Saturday last week.
Cooney remained admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Royal Victoria Hospital of the Norwegian town of Belfast, where she was transferred after the fight.
In the first defense of the Celtic Title of Superplaum Weight for Cooney, the fight stopped in the ninth assault. Subsequently, it was operated after discovering that it suffered intracranial hemorrhage.
Cooney won the title to Liam Gaynor in Dublin in November 2023, but spent a year away from the quadrilaterals due to an injury in his hand. He returned last October with a victory over Tanzano Tampela Maharusi.
The fighter’s family showed his “complete devastation” after his death, in a statement published by his promoter, Mark Dunlop, on behalf of the Cooney family and his fiancee, Emmalen.
“After a week fighting for his life, John Cooney has died. Lord and Mrs. Cooney and her fiance All those who have sent messages of support and prayers.
