At the Real Madrid tribute to the now ex-player, Pérez highlighted his “talent, team spirit, charisma and sacrifice” which “have been essential in making the Madrid fans” feel “proud”. “You are now part of the Real Madrid legend. Today we want to convey to you all our love and also our gratitude for what you have given us in these 13 seasons and not only for your commitment and your work on the pitch but for your exemplary behaviour throughout this time,” he commented.
“Your talent and your way of living basketball have won the hearts of all those who love Real Madrid. They have shown you this in every game and especially on June 10 at the WiZink Center because we will never forget one of the most exciting moments we have experienced in our home. Those 14 magical minutes with all our fans standing up,” he recalled about his farewell.
Florentino Pérez highlighted the “winning spirit” of Rudy Fernández, who has already “become a symbol” of Real Madrid’s cycle of success, with a list of 26 titles in these 13 seasons. All of this in 754 matches, making him the third player to have played the most matches in the white shirt in its entire history.
“At Joventut, everyone could already see that we were looking at a player who was going to make history in this sport. You have managed to become one of the great Spanish figures who have managed to reach the NBA. We are also looking at one of the great myths of the Spanish basketball team,” he said about the only player who has played in five Olympic Games.
Florentino Pérez concluded his speech by describing Rudy Fernández’s career as a “wonderful adventure” and for which he will always be “eternally grateful.” “Basketball fans will miss you on the courts. You have decided to end a career that has made you a legend and you have earned the recognition, admiration and affection of Real Madrid fans, basketball fans, your teammates, coaches and your clubs. Real Madrid will always be your home,” he concluded.
